Late-September conditions show meatpackers competing for animals, reinforcing the value of production line efficiency
Brazil’s live cattle market entered the last week of September with firm prices in most of the country. CEPEA’s figures show a sector where the supply of finished cattle remains tight and competition for raw material directly shapes the daily routine of meatpacking plants.
Market snapshot
In São Paulo, the arroba (@, about 15 kg) held between R$ 355 and R$ 360 on Friday (Sept. 25), even with lower liquidity. The CEPEA/ESALQ Live Cattle Indicator closed the day at R$ 358.80/@ for cash payment, up 1.7% for the week and 4.18% for September.
In Cuiabá (Mato Grosso state), reduced availability of finished cattle led to a one-off increase of R$ 5/@. Trades ranged from R$ 325 to R$ 330/@, with some lots reaching R$ 335/@.
Of the 28 regions monitored by CEPEA, most showed stable prices week over week. Gains were led by northern Goiás (+2.67%), Sorriso in Mato Grosso (+2.28%) and Rondônia (+2.25%).
Slaughter schedules and wholesale
Slaughter schedules generally ranged from four to seven days. At some larger plants, they reached 10 to 15 days. In the Greater São Paulo wholesale market, the whole steer carcass (hindquarter, forequarter and short ribs) closed at R$ 24.58/kg for cash payment, a weekly gain of 1.3%.
What this means for operations
With raw material at higher prices, every kilo processed weighs more on the bottom line. In this context, yield, operational continuity and equipment reliability become even more important. Robust machines built in AISI 304 stainless steel and backed by after-sales support help keep the production line stable and reduce unexpected downtime.
